These disasters caused the release of large amounts of radioactivity into the atmosphere, both as radioactive gases and small particles of radioactive solid. After Chernobyl, high levels of radiation reached as far as the UK.

Some of the radioactive chemicals released decay very slowly, so are still present in the affected areas today. For this reason all over Europe on farms that are known to have been contaminated by the chemicals, animals are still tested for radioactivity before they are allowed to be killed for meat.

They put a lot of radiation into the atmosphere, which has an effect on livings things – it can cause mutations for example.
