Hi Ellie 🙂
I love that every day I’m doing something different and I’m constantly learning new things. It is really exciting when my reactions work and I’ve made a brand new compound.
My favourite thing to do is investigate new compounds by a technique called X-ray crystallography- This is a technique where a tiny crystalline sample of your new compound is mounted in an X-ray beam. The electrons surrounding each atom in the molecule reflect the X-rays back at a detector, and from the pattern of reflected X-rays you can work out the exact position of each atom, giving you a 3D picture of exactly what the molecules in your compound look like!
