That’s a good question.
Nuclear energy can be considered as more environmentally friendly than the traditional burning of fossil fuels because it creates almost no greenhouse gas emissions.
The major disadvantage is the toxic and radioactive waste that it produces. Each year around 10 000 tonnes of new nuclear waste are generated and at the moment there is no safe way to get rid of this waste.
I think that if we can find a way to deal with nuclear waste (and that’s where my research comes in!) then yes, nuclear power is a great idea.
It is a controversial one. In the UK, we’re really struggling for a stable base when e.g. it’s not windy or sunny. However UK had a really bad deal on recent nucler power station in HInkley – the price is just too high! There could be much better ways to invest that money.
So i’d say – in principle yes. But not how it was executed by UK Gov this year
